A dead tree in your house?

An early gift — no "Verbal Threshold" bill

Are you a smoke-alarm Scrooge?

5 dangerous holiday items

A dead tree in your house?

'Tis the season to be jolly, but also to be extra careful. Too much eggnog, faulty wiring, lots of candles, a dead tree in your house — these and other holiday-related hazards abound. Here are some tips to keep your Holidays safe and joyous.

  • Unplug all decorative lights before going to bed or leaving the house.
  • Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Don't overload outlets. Don't use more than three strands of lights connected together.
  • Never use candles near, or on, flammable materials.
  • Keep Christmas trees moist.
  • The Holidays bring lots of guests — are your pets comfortable with that?
  • More alcoholic beverages are consumed during the Holidays, sometimes by people not accustomed to the effects — be sure to be extra careful on the highways. Designated drivers are a great idea.
  • Be sure the new toys are appropriate for little tots — no little parts that can be swallowed.

"Verbal Threshold" Bill is dead

At first, it seemed that this legislation would be rushed through the NJ Senate. But, thankfully, saner heads prevailed.

By a 5 to 1 vote the committee, considering the proposed bill (S-2533), refused to send it to the full Senate. This kills the bill for the time being.

This "no" vote is a major victory for NJ drivers. If enacted, it would have surely led to higher insurance rates.

At a time when the auto insurance picture in NJ is starting to brighten, passage of S-2533 would have darkened things.

Are you a smoke-alarm Scrooge?

How many smoke alarms do you have in your home?

Many of us don't have enough. The larger your home, the more rooms, the more levels and floors, the more smoke detectors you need. A recent study in Connecticut found that 39 percent of all dwellings needed additional detectors. That means over one in every three homes had people at risk.

Another sobering fact is that one in five smoke detectors don't work. Batteries need to be changed. Have you tested yours recently?

If your smoke detectors are over 10-years old, it's a good idea to get news ones.

So, give your home a Holiday gift this year-at least one more smoke alarm.
